The publisher's quarter cloth over cloth-covered boards is good, with light wear to its corners; there is minor age-spotting to the fore-edge of the textblock; the contents, though age-toned, are unmarked but for an inscription at the front free endpaper: "For / Phillip Karl Eidmann / with affection / and admiration / Joseph Campbell / Kyoto / May-June / 1955" The dust jacket, now in Mylar, is worn and rubbed, with the loss of about two square inches from the head of its spine. Campbell was in Japan between May and June of 1955, and spent time in Kyoto with Phillip Karl Eidmann, a scholar of Japanese culture and religion. Two books in the Campbell library catalog at the New York Public Library bear inscriptions to Campbell from Dr Eidmann: Beginners' dictionary of Chinese-Japanese characters; and his Sutra of the teachings left by the Buddha / translated into Chinese by Kumarajtva in the latter part of the Tsin dynasty, (948-971 B.E.). 940 grams
