Jewish Newsletter Complete Run Of 23 Issues Vol. Xiii - 1957 Zukerman, William (Writer, Publisher And Editor)

Offered is a complete run of 23 issues of the "Jewish Newsletter: Independent Thinking on Jewish Problems" for the year 1957 (Volume XIII) edited and published by William Zukerman out of New York City . The issues are three-hole-punched and collected in a two-piece Advanco Pressboard Binder secured with a narrow metal clasp (the issues can be removed); pasted to the front cover is a label for The American Council for Judaism on which it is typed: "JEWISH NEWSLETTER - 1957." The issues are left-folded, printed back-to-back, and contain four pages each. Published bi-weekly, with a hiatus each August, the issues present are as follows: Vol. XIII No. 1 (January 7, 1957) through 23 (December 16, 1957). Containing news and commentary, with occasional letters and book reviews, topics of commentary include: Egyptian Jews on Brink of Disaster ("following the invasion and retreat from Sinai [Suez Crisis]"); Reappraisal in Israel (on the Suez Crisis: "Not only are the Israeli forces withdrawing from Sinai, but they will have to withdraw also from Gaza. Above all, Egypt and [Gamal Abdel] Nasser are now in a stronger position than they were before the invasion"); Echoes of a Pogrom ("Are atrocities committed against Egyptian Jews more shocking and inhuman than atrocities committed against Arabs in Kfar Quassam [Kafr Qasim], Tira and Taiba?"); Two Views of Secretary [Dag] Hammarskjold's Report (I. Sterile Legalism; II. Basis for Final Settlement); Toward Peace in the Middle East by Norman Thomas; Storm over Sanctions [against Israel] (with a quote from President Dwight Eisenhower: "Should a nation which attacks and occupies foreign territory in the face of United Nations disapproval be allowed to impose conditions on its own withdrawal? If we agree - then I fear we will have turned back the clock of international order"); Brotherhood in Action: The Life and Death of Raoul Wallenberg; Behind Israel's Withdrawal; Emigration from Poland - Zionism's Last Hope; Eye-Witnesses in Gaza ("One of the positive effects of the second Arab-Israeli War has been to lift somewhat the murky fog in which the Arab refugee problem has been enveloped almost completely for more than eight years"); Terror in Israel (on the assassination of Dr. Rudolph Kastner); Danger Signals (on the thirteenth annual conference of The American Council for Judaism); Jordan and Israel; Israel on Its Ninth Anniversary (with topics: I. Invasion of Egypt; II. The Revival of "Ingathering" [of the Exiles]); A Sham Revolution (on the American Jewish League for Israel); The [Dwight] Eisenhower Doctrine and Israel; The Paradox of Communist Anti-semitism; American Jews Criticize Israel; [American Jewish] Committee Under Attack; Israel and Diaspora Jews (two views: Norman Thomas and Herman A. Gray); Mixed Families in Israel; [David] Ben-Gurion's Credo and American Jews; New Trends in Arab-Israeli Relations; An Appeal in Behalf of "Kol Nidre"; The Sickness of American Zionism; Non-Zionist Reactions to [David] Ben-Gurion's Credo; Israel's "Messianic Mission"; Middle East Impressions - Summer 1957 by Don Peretz; Ban on Polish Emigration [to Israel]; one-paragraph "A Letter from Moshe Sharett" to The Jewish Newsletter (which reads, in part, "I was left wondering where you would be as an editor if there wasn't a State of Israel for you to serve it up to your readers boiled and grilled and roasted for breakfast, lunch and dinner?" with reply from William Zukerman). The three-hole punches to the left margin area occasionally impact a portion of a word (which in most cases can be recognized by context).
