Voltaire's famous epic poem in an edition which claims to be something of a definitive version with each canto (chants) finishing with a list of variations (see example image); plus 40 pages of introductory information. Bound in calf skin, with gilt-tooled spine in six compartments; one of which is dyed red as background to the book's title. While the boards are in a sound overall condition (with some scuffing and bending in places), there is a visible spine/front board fissure - making a little of the binding material visible - see main image. The joint nevertheless remains attached but is loose. Internally, most pages have some tanning with occasional spotting.
