"This important volume analyzing America's geologic composition and history was authored by Jules Marcou and published in Zurich in 1858. Marcou chose North America for his field of study after being conferred the title of Traveling Geologist from the College of Sorbonne in Paris and served on the Whipple Expedition to survey a route for the Pacific Railroad. This work was published while the talented scientist served as the professor of geology and paleontology at the Polytechnic School of Zurich. The contents reflect Marcou's years of expertise, utilizing the vast amount of data collected during his several years in the United States. Ten chapters cover a variety of topics like paleontology (with corresponding color plates of fossils), the geology of New Mexico, gold in California, and a bibliography of related works. Three maps are included - Carte Geologique des Etats-Unis et des Provinces Anglaises de l'Amerique du Nord (a colorful geologic map of the United States, updated from the first 1853 edition - 23.9" x 18.9"), Geological Map of New Mexico (the first printed map dedicated to the territory's geology - 28.9" x 9.1"), and Carte des Etats Unis d l'Amerique Nord Pour servir aux observations geologiques par W. Maclure. (A reduced reproduction of William Maclure's influential geologic map of America, first published in 1809 - 12" x 9.25").
