The set springs from the first edition which was the Real-Encyclopädie der Classischen Alterthumswissenschaft in Alphabetischer Ordnung ("Practical Encyclopedia of the Study of Classical Ancient History in Alphabetical Order"). The set's Wikipedia entry notes its original compilation by August Friedrich Pauly, but then added to by Georg Wissowa, who then died, and then Pauly died, and its completion and editing were done in rolling waves by a number of editors and publishers; its first publication was in 1839, and then "Christian Waltz (1802?1857) and Wilhelm Siegmund Teuffel completed the 6 volume first edition in 1852" (Wikipedia) with additional editions over the years.
