Slight soiling, rubbing and edgewear to covers, with a bit of staining to the rear cover of Volume 1. On the bottom of both spines, in gilt letters, the name of the prior owner who had these volumes bound, Murdo J. MacLeod (b. 1935), a Scottish historian of Latin America, who published extensively on the history of colonial-era Central America, the Caribbean, and the Atlantic world. Moderate foxing to page edges. Very slight foxing to front and rear end-matter. Otherwise, apart from moderate age toning, a very good set - clean and unmarked - of this scarce collection. He was also known by the name Pepe Milla and the pseudonym Salome Jil. Work on this history was begun by Jose Milla, at the instance of the government of Guatemala. The second volume, first published after the death of Milla in 1882, is edited by Antonio Machado.
