North Pole, Alaska gradually developed in the late 1940s and 1950s between two recently constructed military airfields southwest of Fairbanks. The town was incorporated in 1953 and one of its earliest businesses was a trading post named the Santa Claus House, playing off the festive name. The construction of a large oil refinery in 1977 prompted additional growth. This street plan of North Pole was created by Wayne and Virginia Clark and published in Fairbanks by Alaskan Arctic Publications in 1979. A negative blue and white color scheme gives a 'feeling' of the cold environment. Points of interest (including a golf course and the Santa Claus House) are noted in the lower left, near an inset of the northern part of the town. A history of North Pole and numerous advertisements for local businesses (several are numbered on the map) can be found on the verso.
